  • Affordable Capture / Effects Card?

I’d like to get a capture card. I’m not concerned with capturing or monitoring, my main interest is real-time effects processing. I’d prefer not to wait for a render while I’m editing.

Can anyone recommend a card that won’t break the bank? I’ve seen stuff like the DeckLink base model for around $300 but I’m not sure that would give me real-time effects with my Sony’s HDV footage. Also not sure if it would work in my Mac Pro…

    Current Setup:
    Mac Pro 2.8GHz (8-Cores) – 8GB of RAM
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.4
    Sony HVR-V1U

    Output:
    Online, always

Any recommendations welcome, I’m a total n00b so school me if you need to. 🙂

Capturing to ProRes will come at the cost of file size. ProRes will look identical, but it’s about 6 times larger in file size. Renders will speed up, and all graphics will look much better as well. Further, you’ll get more RT playback of unrendered effects to begin with.

Might also help your workflow to see unrendered material by typing option+p. This will play them back at full resolution, however may lower the speed of the playback. It will help you determine if your effects are ready to really render. Also look into the “QuickView” window. This is a RAM preview which during the first playback, its’ much like option+p… but it loops, and then once loaded into RAM, it plays back at full res and full speed.

Just so you know: A video capture card does not accelerate effects rendering.
