AES on BNC
I searched here but didn’t find an answer. I just ordered a Sony HVR-1500 and noticed it has AES output but on BNC rather than the more familiar XLR. Since a BNC is only two conductors, do you still get two channels on each BNC or is it back to one channel? And, how to you wire a cable from an AES stereo XLR to the BNC? I’m sure Sony did this to save space but it has thrown me a loop since I haven’t dealt with AES on BNC before. Thanks for any help!

The rear panel shows two BNC in (for four inputs) ann two BNC out (for four outputs)

Does anyone know how to wire AES audio from an XLR (3 conductors) to a BNC (two conductors)? I can see two separate channels on an XLR (two hots with a common ground) but how to they accomplish 2-channels of AES into one BNC connector (only two conductors)? Do you use Belden 2-conductor shielded from the XLR and somehow go to Belden coax for the BNC? I’d appreciate a wiring schematic if someone has one.

De-balancing three wire audio to two wire audio is fairly simple.
With digital audio you also need to pay attention to impedance and voltage.
Many companies make these “baluns” converters. Googling found me this one.

Digital (AES) doesnt require pins 2 and 3 (hot and cold) to be present to provide stereo (ie 1 for left and 1 right). The stereo infromation is intrinsically encoded into the datastream.
Although Im not 100% on the wiring to go bnc to aes or vice versa, 2 mins with a soldering iron will tell you if my suspicion is corect.BNC pin – XLR(hot or pin 2)
BNC screen – XLR 1 (or screen)If that doesnt work Im surprised. Try linking 2 and 3 in XLR but I rekon not.
