Has anyone shot video from a small top wing airplane? The client suggests we take a door off. He wants to do an aerial approach shot to his property, etc. Even with the door off, it still seems like the airplane will be in the way. And flight windspeed seems like a sure way to harm the camera. Is there a safe way to do a decent job of this? Any help is highly appreciated!

Also, if there is a better forum for this question please let me know. Thanks.

You might get some help in the Cinematography forum.

There are probably some old pros who can do a decent job of shooting aerials hand-held; I can’t and won’t try. If you must, use the widest angle you can and fly low and slow. I know you’ll be thoroughly belted in.

Aerials aren’t cheap, but the look you get with a mount and experienced pilot is worth it.

    Good shooting!

Thanks Leo. I agree, doing it right is a beautiful thing. How this client wants to accomplish it probably won’t be.

You should look at mounting a good lipstick camera to something on the plane and this is actually FAA illegal.

It amazes me every day how people want us to get $1000 shots for $50. Any more, I explain how it needs to be done and give them a reasonable price. If they can’t come up with the correct amount of money, I don’t waste any more time with them.
