Hi there, I have read the READ THIS FIRST post on how to speed up render times in AE7, but my question is this:

I’m running a PowerBook 2.66 Ghz with 2Gigs RAM, and when I am using AE7, it takes about 1.5-3 seconds to update the preview window when i make a change, during which time i can’t click anything.

I find this is especially bad when using 3d layers.

Is there anything I can change (and how do i change it?) that will help decrease the preview time…. i can live with long render times, but this is driving me crazy.

    Thanks,
    Dan Roberts

There are always compromises for speed. Here are a few:

    – try working at lower res in the comp window
    – try working in Draft 3D mode
    – try switching off motion blur at the comp level
    – try disabling the effects on a layer (or layers) by clicking the F button on the layer(s)

I think my real question is: is this normal with my specs or is there something I have set wrong in my ram allocation/limits?

This is very normal, AE uses a combination of things when taking into accout render time. 2.66 ghz is not that strong of a processor with only 2 gigs of Ram. Im not sure but I think 2 is the minimum you can have to effectivly run AE. This is a very processor based rendering program (most people are using quad and eight cores now to run smoothly). Your graphics card as well has somthing to do with this, but unless your running one of the Nivida FX cards (the ones made for rendering). Which I dont think is the case, your not really going to benifit from it.
