Is there a way in AE to get a colored overlay of your Alpha? i.e. Like in discreet software, it overlays Alpha with Red so you can still see the entire frame while you work on your roto?

Not directly. Never thought about it, really. That’s a thing I really dislike about Photoshop, but that’s just me.

You can easily create a red solid layer and use a shift channels to pull the alpha from any other layer.

The bigger question is, why do you think you need to do this? I’m just asking because it’s never come up before, not that I can recall.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

No particular reason… I learned to roto in Flame, then started using Combustion back on version 1. Just something I got used to and prefer. The next best is turning off “render” when working in layer view, so you can see the whole image while rotoing.

    thanks anyhow
