AE won’t recognize new RAM
Posted by Ben Avechuco on January 31, 2008 at 8:01 pmStrange: After Effects doesn’t seem to want to access the addtional memory I’ve installed.
I went from 3 Gigs in my machine to 11 Gigs.
What I am seeing is After Effects displays that it is using 5% of 3 Gigs available (during start up). (should be 11 Gigs).
In Preferences / Memory & cache It says that AE will be using 75% of available memory (1.5 Gigs) – when it should be showing 8.25 Gigs.Any suggestions on how to fix this? I don’t know if there are preferences to throw away.
Thanks in advance!

January 31, 2008 at 8:14 pmAfter Effects is a 32-bit application, each instance of AE cannot access more than 3GB of RAM. Your extra RAM will benefit you if you enable Multiprocessing in CS3 and if you have a 64-bit OS (Mac OS X, Windows XP 64, etc.). If you have a 32-bit OS, such as Windows XP, then your computer cannot access more than 4GB of RAM in total and your extra RAM is going to waste.

January 31, 2008 at 11:04 pmYeah AE won’t recognize more than 3GB ram… I had a similar problem with my 4GB. Windows xp32 bit won’t recognize more than 4GB ram… you have you get xp64 bit to use more ram. I assume you are already using xp64…. unless of course you’re using a MAC. I got AE to recognize one extra GB of ram by using the “/3GB boot.ini switch” – (Google it).The extra ram DOES NOT go to waste however….. system processes, background stuff can use the ram…blah blah blah you get the point.

The 32-bit version of Windows XP is not able to address more than 4GB of RAM for any purpose. Your statement is correct for 64-bit operating systems.

January 31, 2008 at 11:50 pmMy mistake for not being more specific. I meant the extra ram (in general) doesn’t go to waste… but 11 GB of ram?…Yeah there’s definitely ram going to waste on xp32 bit!

February 1, 2008 at 9:23 pmHi, I’m running Mac OS 10.4.10 on a Dual 3 GHz Dual-core Mac Pro with 7 GB of RAM. I’m on AE CS3 (8.02.27, just updated yesterday). I currently have Multiprocessing off. I use the Gridiron Nucleo Pro plugin (v2.0.1.168, also just updated yesterday).
Will turning on the multiprocessing help my performance? Or will this conflict with Nucleo and cause problems? Thanks for your help!!

June 17, 2008 at 4:30 pmis this something adobe can fix (we’re on a mac) or is it a physical limitation of the operating system? we’re trying to run 2k outputs now that we’re dealing with red footage and the machine is just chocking on the outputs. Is there something like that workaround for mac?
thanks!
