AE won’t open
Posted by Drew Freyder on August 15, 2007 at 1:04 pmAfter Effects 7.0 has been working perfectly for me until yesterday. Now when it is initializing and shows the loading screen, it gets caught up on the words “Initializing User Interface”.
Does anyone know what’s going on or how to fix it?

August 15, 2007 at 2:00 pmi would start by pulling the pref file to the desktop (or anywhere, but i don’t think i’d throw it out yet).
what opertating system are you using? and have you installed any updates or other software/hardware recently?
there are several older codecs that cause ae to crash. older plugins may also give you problems.

August 15, 2007 at 6:40 pmWhen you said pref file, were you referring to previous file?? If not, then I’m not sure what you are referring to and need directions to find it. But if so, I moved the last file I was working on to the desktop and tried opening that file in order to launch AE. It worked but took almost 45 minutes to open!
I then closed it to try again and haven’t been able to open it since.
Mac OS X 10.4.10
I don’t think I updated anything since yesterday (when the problem first started occurring)I hope this helps but I AM STUCK! This is no fun.

August 15, 2007 at 7:34 pmsorry, i meant preference file… interesting that moving the last saved file to the desktop made a slight difference. i’m not sure what to make of that.
anyway, in osx, the preference file should be in users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects/7.0. remove the file ‘adobe after effects 7.0 pref’ and see if that helps.
if you still have probelms, try moving all the files from library/quicktime and users/username/library/quicktime to a new location (like a folder on the desktop). these files are various codecs, normally third-party codecs, that you have installed. if this helps, but you need some of those codecs, add just the necessary codecs, and try restarting ae. if it fails, then you will need to go one by one until you find the bad one. then try downloading the latest version.
you may also want to try removing all third-party plugins from adobe after effects/plugins. ae installed plugins are in folders named ‘standard’ and ‘professional.’ if that helps, then you’ll have to add the other plugins back in one by one until you find the bad ones, then try to download the latest versions of those…

August 16, 2007 at 12:59 pmSWEET! It opens again after removing the prefs file. Now it created a new one in its place, should I delete the old one or what should I do with it? Is it ok to run like this from here on out? I only noticed that the tip of the day reset and if that’s all it does, I’m back in business!
Thank you for taking the time to help.

August 16, 2007 at 1:40 pmi’m glad your bck up and running…
if you don’t have any probelms resetting the ae prefs the way you like them, then you should be fine to go and delete the old pref file.
