Hi all, after struggling with After Effects on my PC, I finally got a Mac and am hoping to use it for all my video editing. My problem is that I record all my footage on my PC using the fraps codec, and there is no fraps codec for the Mac.

I have tried to get around this by using virtual dub to save my .avis as “old format” avis, but I still cannot get After Effects to read my file. I have downloaded all the codecs for Quicktime that I could. Quicktime plays my files on the Mac fine. After Effects even plays the audio from my avis on the Mac fine. However, the video is a plain white screen.

I can’t use my PC because AE crashes whenever I scrub the timeline (I’m using a top-of-the-line Dell with 4 CPUs built for video editing, and I am working on XP.) I am looking for a way to either convert all my files to .mov without losing file quality (a batch method of doing this would be wonderful, since I use hundreds of different clips per movie) or convert them to an avi format that my Mac AE will read.

    Thanks for the help 🙂

    Have you tried installing Perian?

No, I thought about it but I was told that it messes up with things like DiVX. I have all the codecs from this package, and I believe the Perian codec is one of them:

Yeah, but DivX is just a synonym for EVIL! =)

Seriously though, if you can open the file in QuickTime Player, then you should be able to export it out to any of the QuickTime formats (buy QT Pro if you don’t already have it… it’s worth it). You may also be able to do this with Compressor if you own Final Cut Studio.

What else would QuickTime Pro be good for though? I’d like to justify buying it for my boss before I ask him to pay for it. Is it just good for video conversions?

I honestly don’t remember all of the things you can’t do without QT Pro, but if you look in your QT Player menus that should give you an idea. All of the unlockable Pro features have a Pro icon next to them.

Well, let’s see. One can export AVI to:
    Animation
    BMP
    Cinepak
    Componet DvD
    DV-Pal
    DV/DVC-Pro
    DVCPro-Pal
    Graphics
    H.261
    H.263
    H.264
    Intel Indeo Video 4.4
    JPEG 2000
    Motion JPEG A
    Motion JPEG B
    MPEG-4 Video
    None
    Photo JPEG
    Planar RGB
    PNG
    Sorenson Video
    Sorenson Video 3
    TGA
    TIFF
    Video

Not bad for a one-time fee of $35.00

Sweet, I’ll have to get it then.

But is there a way for me to make it so I don’t have to convert the files for them to be read in AE?

Dump your vid to a DV Cam and re-import or,
Go here: https://ffmpegx.com/news.html and check out this tool which supposedly will do fraps to DV direct.

I’ll try ffmpegx, but last time I tried to download it from the site, the download errored out twice 😛 Hopefully the download works tomorrow when I try again.

And alas, I do not have the capability to copy footage to a DV camera.
