AE & Wacom
Posted by Kurt Murphy on April 20, 2009 at 8:14 pmI’ve been using a Wacom tablet since the last millenium and I love it… It USED to work great with AE (like version 3), but it seems to be getting touchier with each AE upgrade. Using the pen re-arranges my layers constantly (I’m used to undo-ing a lot), and sometimes it’s very difficult to click select a parameter (it sometimes doesn’t highlight)… Anybody else have these issues? I wrote to Wacom a couple years ago, but never heard back…
thanks,
kurt murphy

April 20, 2009 at 8:50 pmThis won’t help you at all, but I have similar issues.
I have a small 4×6 wacom for two dual ACD’s and I love it, but its can get annoying when trying to click a value to manually enter the number.
I also have a lot of difficulty with my wacom pen and zaxwerks.

April 20, 2009 at 9:38 pmHi Kurt 🙂
First I would install the latest driver for your tablet. Updating your graphic card driver could also help here.
Open the pen tablet properties and alter the “Tip Feel” to soft & the “Double Click Distance” to small. Does the same thing happen?
Matthew, what are your issues when using Zaxwerks?

> Do you know EVERYTHING?! After YEARS of frustration, this little alteration seems to have worked… ONCE again, many thanks! I urge everyone who’s been having problems to try it.

April 21, 2009 at 1:19 amI have a similar problem with my Intuos 3. It registers a click even though I haven’t clicked. So sometimes when I go to tap, it’s registering the tap as a second click, thereby opening up the item I clicked on. In AE this is really annoying because it keeps opening up comps.
It’s really annoying in all other instances too, because it means I’m dealing with random clicks. Deselections happen. RAM previews stop. All sorts of annoying little problems.
Anyone else have a similar situation?

April 22, 2009 at 12:35 amMy issues with my wacom and zax are strange.
I only have issues with certain types of clicks.
When I need to swap between cam/light/object (as well as track/dolly/rot) it often takes two very slow and careful clicks.
I also have the same issue when trying to select a single pose or transition on the timeline.
Clicking anything else in the program has no issues.
I am on a leopard mac, with ae cs3 and pro invig

April 22, 2009 at 4:33 amHi Matthew,
First, I would advise you to use the latest version of Zaxwerks (None major upgrades are for free)
I only had the issues you are describing with heavily modeled projects with a high Draft Offset quality setting (0.1 for instance).
Now just to test if this is also relevant to your issue, open a project that gave you a hard time, select all objects and set your draft offset settings to(10)You can leave the best offset settings at (0.1) or even (0.01) if necessary, this will slow your final render but not affect your UI manipulation. This should eliminate your issues, if not let us know.

April 22, 2009 at 6:40 pmJust to throw in my two cents:
Although I have my frustrations with trying to select certain values in AE on a Wacom tablet (especially on a high-res screen), it is safe to say that some of those nit-picky problems won’t go away without an interface upgrade from Adobe. Flame is so easy to work with on a tablet simply because the buttons are large and a lot of simple operations are gestural.
Does anyone know if Adobe is interested in making a tablet-friendly interface?
What makes you explode?

April 28, 2009 at 5:37 pmI also have a problem with an Intuos 3 in After Effects. The problem is that it registers single clicks as double clicks sometimes. Of course I’ve tried updating the drivers and playing with all the tablet settings, uninstalling, reinstalling etc. None of it seems to make any difference.
It’s not just AE though, although there the problem is particularly pronounced. Even navigating round Mac OS I’m registering double clicks where I haven’t made any.
I’m not sure whether this is a hardware problem or not… and if so, whether it’s to do with the tablet, the pen or something in the Mac. USB ports and RAM sprung to mind, especially since the problem seems to get more pronounced when the system is more occupied with stuff.
I’ve noticed there are quite a lot of similar types of complaints on the web about this.
Any ideas would be most welcome!

June 18, 2009 at 12:09 amI am having this issue as well having just started using AE. I have had no problems with shake, nuke or flame, but choosing dropdown menus in effects panels etc in AE is major annoyance with a Wacom. Even with the suggestions here it doesn’t work properly most times.
My other point would be, just how many compositors *don’t* use a Wacom?
