  • AE Type antialiasing issues…………

Posted by Jeff Dobrow on February 22, 2006 at 3:56 pm

Is it me, or is AE’s type not quite antialiased all that well.

I notice some subtle issues on type edges,….especially when rendered hicon, like white type on a black BG.

I do not see these issues when doing type in Smoke or Flame….

Anyone have any experience with this? or know of a way to ‘turn up’ the antialiasing samples? (obviously these are rendered with ‘best’ quality)

    ?

    thx….

Are you using an older version of After Effects (5.5 or earlier)? Earlier versions required you to enable Continuous Rasterization for vector layers (such as created by Basic Text or imported EPS files). More recent versions have an integrated type engine that automatically rasterizes as the the size of the type changes. But in addition to that layer switch, you need to have Best Quality enabled as well, to see the highest antialiasing.

Yes, I’ve notived this as well. It’s subtle but the type is definitely not as smooth as an exact duplicate done in Illustrator or Photoshop and then imported. As a rule I put a .5 pixel blur (less on really small type) on all type made in AE; it seems to do the trick.

    Hi,
I’ve noticed this as well. Like Scott, I use a blur of .3. Sometimes I apply this to whole comps, not just text, as it takes off the hard edge of everything. I just started experimenting with AE 7, and they may have made some adjustments to this. I’d love to see them build this into the text engine.
