AE to FCP – Data Rate Loss
I posted on here before that I shot on an F900 – downconverted to DVCam and then captured to FCP. Now when I’ve done some effects in AE, the resolution looks lossy, especially on the wide shots. Now, I realize that some loss might occur, but the data rate for the reconnected media is 1/3rd the rate of the original quicktime. Does that make sense?
I already fixed one problem by telling it to render upper field first. But it’s still looking like crud. I’ve tried a bunch of different formats like h.264,DVCPRO50,and reglar old DV. Not seeing any improvements.
OK – To answer a few questions, I didn’t export the file from FCP to AE….I imported the quicktime FCP made during capture from the capture scratch,
am I foolish to think that that’s the best way to do it. At this time, I don’t have the ability to recapture the f900 footage (I’m the DP doing color correction, can’t get my hands on the tapes or get the producers to pay for another transfer since they didn’t really pay for the first one)Help me if you can!!!

First of all I wouldn’t involve any lossy codec at all like DV. DV is really a turd format which although convenient for consumer needs is NOT something you want to use if you don’t have to. Sample in your footage with any uncompressed card like Blackmagic Decklink. Then when transferring to AE, use something like Quicktime’s Animation codec set to best settings/Millions of colors.
