AE to Avid best way?

Hi,

I frequently render files out for use in an Avid. I use the Avid Meridian codec which requires the files to be 720×486. (The codec can be downloaded from Avid’s site.) Our Avid Symphony bays are Mac based and we have had no problems with picture quality with this work flow.

If your comps are 720×480 there may be artifacting when the Avid converts the file to a 720×486 Meridian file.

Also make sure that the editor isn’t compressing the animation as it is brought into the Avid as that will definitly cause artifacts.

You don’t have to export Quicktime movies anymore (unless you need things like embeded alpha channels, for instance).
I think it was AE 6.5 the one that added the ability to export native AVID OMF essence files, ie, just like the ones AVID systems use to capture and edit. You can just export an OMF file, and the AVID system will be able to use it without transcoding. At least that’s how I understand it. You have settings for 1:1 uncompressed, DV, interlaced or progressvie, etc.

Also make sure the editor’s import setting are the same as the settings you’re rendering out with (field order, etc). I know movies imported with the wrong field order have caused some of my quicktimes to look really bad in Avid.
