I am using After Effects to build various opens for my television station. My current project is relatively advanced but not anything that I haven’t done before. When I try to render the project, it freezes up my computer. This occurs withing the first 10 frames of my render. I don’t even have the option of a force quit. I have to reboot the computer by disconnecting the AC(I know the computer doesn’t like that). I have done this 10-15 times and the same thing happens. There is some nesting involved in the render. But there is nothing on those particular frames that would freeze up the computer(effects, new layers ect.). My computer is a Powermac G4 with a OS 9.2. Any suggestions?

The first thing that I would do is try rendering your file as numbered images (rather than a QT file) and see if it allows you to avoid the lock-up. (It often does help with things like this.) If it doesn’t help, then you will at least know which frame *exactly* is causing the problem and then you will be far ahead of the game in trying to discern what exactly is causing the problem.

And try searching the COW for info on the secret prefs, to purge RAM during a render.
