We’re putting together a render farm to run AE and XSI using 6 Dell 1750 servers(dual 3Ghz xeon, 2gb ram, running XP). My question is about the speed of the network with large video files at render time.

I’m conviced that a gigafast(t100) network will work, and believe that AE doesn’t need to constantly “stream” large video files at full speed over the network, just a frame here and there.

My boss seems to think we need a gigabit(t1000) network to keep up with all the data.

The 4 other workstations are already on a gigabit network, one of which is mostly used as a server for shared data.

So will a gigafast switch support the data? The majority of our work is :30 commercials, with some hdv and dvcproHD footage.
