AE Render Engine – damaged/missing footage error
We are getting this error in the Render Engine log –
“After Effects error: file ‘footage name’ cannot be imported — this ‘.mpeg’ file is damaged or unsupported”-when trying to use our render farm.It seems the render engines are not recognizing the footage (maybe a missing CODEC?), they seem to work fine when not using mpeg footage. It was working fine until we switched out our server where all our footage is stored.
Our project files still work fine and can render out on our workstations but not on the render farm(s).
Any thoughts? Thanks.

As Dave LaRonde extensively explains in his Stock Answers (search the forum for them) AE does not do well with compressed footage. Mpeg is a final playback codec, where all information is squeezed/compressed and organized to look good for playback only and not for additional work. If you can’t get your hands on the original footage, then at least transcode the mpeg to a lossless format and then work with it in AE.

This is good to know, but now really the information I was looking for. We shoot on a SONY Z1U to Mini DV. This footage is then captured through Premiere as an MPEG, what the system naturally captures as.
Our render farm has been working fine using this MPEG footage for months until our server was switched over to a new system. I was wondering why this would suddenly stop working as projects without the MPEG footage renders fine.
