I have been reading up on this issue for a while and have a few questions…

    1) I just got hired for a design position where everyone is using a Mac and hence I am going to get it too, just so that I am not the odd one out. Money isn’t an issue, so I don’t mind spending it.

    2) If I get the new Macbook Pro now, I won’t be able to run AE for a while, since I need the system by June

    3) If I get the Powerbook G4, will AE 7 run good on it?

Does the G4 sound like a good option?

I use AE on my Powerbook on occasion just to do test comps for timing and such. It’s not something I think you’ll want to use full time. Unfortunately I think AE will still be “slow” on the Macbooks because it’s not native to the Intel chips yet. I believe Adobe said it won’t be re-written for a while.

So, hard to say which will be slower: an old computer or a new fast one being translated.

Can you not borrow a G5 for a little while to tide you over? Does it have to be a laptop?

Reports indicate that AE 7 will run slowly on the Intel MacBook until AE is rewritten for the Intel MacBook in 2007 as projected. So in my opinion, the Intel MacBook Pro is not an option at all until 2007, for AE and PS at least.

So, currently, for AE and PS, there is nothing faster than the Powerbook G4 or the G5 on the Apple side. The choice is clear. 🙂

[Chris Smith] “Can you not borrow a G5 for a little while to tide you over? Does it have to be a laptop?”

Interesting option. Might have to find a local studio that will let me test ride it.

Thanks for the opinions, Chris and Steve.

Actually the choice isn’t clear, if you can borrow and G5 or Powerbook and wait for intel do that, since once AE is re-written for intel, it will be a better option. And remember that the Power PC line is ending, so your buying a machine that is good now but will endup not being supported in a few years.

Try buying a cheap power book to tide you over then invest in a good Macbook when AE is ready for intel.

    Would be my suggestion

    Hope this helps…

It’s mostly a ram issue. If you have a powerbook g4 with 512mb of ram of course AE will run slowly. But if you have 2gb of ram it should run quite smoothly. It is also a hard drive issue though. I mean, if you have a powerbook with only 10gb’s left on the hard drive everything is going to run slowly. I say that if you have to go the laptop route definetly get a 15″ or 17″ powerbook g4 with atleast 1.5gigs of ram (believe me, getting a good workspace in AE on a 12″ powerbook is nearly impossible). Don’t get a MacBook until Adobe releases all of the new software.
