AE mov files in FCP… can I avoid pre-rendering?
When importing video from an After Effects render, I am forced to pre-render every file in my session every time I make a change…Is this simply a codec issue? If i export as pro-res or something of that sort can I avoid having to render at every change?

Probably.

If your AE render matches your sequence settings, yes. Just note that if you need transparency, you’ll have to go to ProRes 4444.

Codec or an audio issue. Render to the exact codec, frame rate, and audio rate of your timeline. Been doing this for over 10 years, never have to render my AE movies in FCP unless they have an alpha channel.
