AE Make Movie slows down as render progresses
I have an issue with After Effects and I’m not sure if it’s just the way it works or if there’s a tweak that might fix it. I’m trying to render a 15 minute movie. I click on Make Movie and hit render and it starts out fine, but as the process continues, the performance slows down. The estimated time goes up. About an hour in and it’s almost stopped altogether. Each frame is taking 10 times as long as it took to render when I first started.
I’ve tried a bunch of stuff in the preferences — tweaking the memory/cache preferences, purging frames in the secret menu, etc…
It doesn’t seem to matter how I set up the preferences. Am I missing something?
I’m running a G5 ppc Dual 1.8 with 3gb of ram.
Adobe After Effects CS3Is it normal to slow down like that as rendering continues? It’s not as if the composition changes as it progresses. There are no new layers / elements involved.

this isn’t normal behavior… does it happen on most projects, or just this one?
time based effects (echo, widetime, etc) can sometimes make renderes increase steadily in render time, are you using any time effects?
how big is the rendered file (files size, not frame size) and how much free space do you have on your drive?
it’s unlikely, but seems possible, that if you are rendering to a lossless or uncompressed file and your drive is somewhat full, that you could be getting decreased performance as the drive gets more full. this could be compounded with the disk cache enabled.

I am rendering to a lossless file, but my hard drive has more than enough room on it. My other drives do not have that much room on them, so is it possible that something is going to them? Is there any place I should check to make sure all info is flowing to my designated drive?I am not using any complex processing on the clip, just some basic mattes. Also, the slowing down occurs before I even get to the most intensive sections (which aren’t even that intense).
One thing I forgot to mention is that the picture does not play back in real time when working on a clip. It stutters and/or plays back in slow motion. So, there seems to be a performance issue even when not rendering. But there seems to be some sort of bottleneck occurring as rendering progresses.
Any further suggestions?

Thanks for the clarification. Since AE does not have real-time playback, does that mean that the jittery play-back shows there’s some sort of rendering problem? I can’t play back for longer than a second or two before it goes into slow motion. Likewise, rendering starts out quick, then slows down over time.
The footage I am using is lossless animation. Could it be that this is too much for my system? I understand this might be the case, I just don’t know why there would be a progressing bottleneck. At this rate, it might take forever to output the movie.

I’m having the same problem using After Effects CS4, Quad machine 4gb of ram.
If I render off a comp with just a still image in it for 1min it starts of fast and the slows down over time until it is very slow about one frame every 4 secs.
Are the any recommended settings in prefrences that might solve this or does anyone know why this could be happening?,
