ae in pc vs mac
Posted by Anis Haron on March 18, 2008 at 9:55 amhello all,
Is there any difference on the output, After Effects on PC vs Mac based platform?
What i usually do is create graphical content with after effects on PC, and import the output to Final Cut Pro on Mac..
Im thinkin of getting AE for Mac, if theres any difference on the output..
thanks!

March 18, 2008 at 3:50 pmDepending on how you’re treating your footage in AE (whether you’re using color management or not) and how you’re viewing your footage there may or may not be a difference on output. The native gammas of Windows (2.2) and Mac (1.8) environments are different, so the same footage viewed in either environment may look different (depending on what you’re using to view it and the color management steps you’ve taken). Phew, complicated.
Also, I’ve noticed in opening up old Windows AE projects that blurs appear much heavier in the Mac version. For example, a Box Blur with 6 iterations and radius 3 in a Windows project might look about as blurry as a Box Blur with 6 iterations and radius 1 in a Mac project… I have no idea why this is.

March 18, 2008 at 7:07 pmI’ve heard that render times even on the same CPU tend to be faster on the PC version. I have no idea why, but I’ve actually seen it.
However, trade that off against the constant threat of the blue screen of death and virus attacks. I stayed mac, but fast render times are always welcome.
Anyone else have any comments on this? I’d be willing to share a project file if someone wants to do a render comparison. I’m on an intel 2.33 Core2Duo running 10.4.10

March 19, 2008 at 1:16 amSince apple is using Intel hardware, Both PC and MAC are about the same, that is …
if you spend the same money on a PC as you would do on a MAC.But the gamma differences between PC and MAC are a pain to work with, so the best thing would be to use the same OS as you use for editing.
