AE in Parallels
Posted by Lee Arnold on June 26, 2007 at 3:06 pmI have a 17″ MacBook Pro and a PC desktop. I want to upgrade to AE 8 but would rather not have to buy a version for both operating systems. Will AE run just as well on the Macbook Pro in Parallels as it will in OS X?

June 26, 2007 at 3:47 pmdownload the beta at adobe labs and try it out. many have been using ae7 with windows on intel macs due to the numerous issues with running 7 under rosetta and are very happy. most of them, i believe, are running windows via boot camp though.

June 26, 2007 at 4:25 pmI have tried both boot camp and parallels, and I must say boot camp is better. Unless I am missing some setting, Parallels divides up your system resources between OSX and itself (since they are both running at the same time). This means when working in Windows you will only get half of your available RAM, which is obviously not good.
It also buries any files created in Parallels/Windows in a way where I can’t find them from OSX, so if I ever uninstalled Parallels or something crashed, I would lose all my work done on the Windows side.
With Boot Camp, it’s a separate partition so you DO have to share drive space, but other than that it worked very well, and all files were exposed so that you could recover them from OSX if Windows crashed.

June 26, 2007 at 5:46 pmBoot Camp has a resource issue as well; which I didn’t know about until I installed an additional 2GB of RAM in my Mac Pro. Windows XP on the Mac Pro will recognize a maximum of 2 GB of RAM no matter how much you have installed. Major Bummer. I don’t like having expensive RAM sitting in my machine not being utilized. It clinches my decision to purchase the Adobe Suite for the Mac Pro when it is released. Final Cut Studio and the Adobe Suite on one OS. That should be pretty sweet.
