    I have 2 Gigs of RAM, and in the info window it says” 11% used of 2.0 GB.

    so what’s going on here?

    May be a bug/ memory leak. The PS layer effects don’t work that well in AE. If possible, you shoudl try to re-create your effect entirely inside AE with the tools there.
