    Hi herd,

I’m trying to render a project and keep getting this error:

“After Effect Error: attempt to get an item address from a position outside of list length. (27 ::15)”

I’ve rendered the animation before with no problems as a qt. Since then i have changed computers (new super hot PC) and upgraded to ae7 from 6.5. I am currently trying to render as an uncompressed avi.

Google searching on this subject turned up a little advice, but all random bits and pieces, which i’ve tried, nothing solid. (eg things like uncheck preview in info palette)

The project is quite large, many layers, mostly 3d with camera flythroughs.

    Any thoughts??

This is a generic memory problem. It could quite well be that the AVI-CoDec you are trying to use is to blame – AE isn’t exactly good at handling some stuff used by capture cards and the AVI format itself is very limited and full of implementation flaws and meory leaks. It’s close to impossible to pin down such problems, so the smart move would be to switch ti QT or image sequences and convert them to your AVI e.g. using VirtualDub.

Thanks for the reply 🙂 I’ve tried a qt and had the same error. Rather not have to revert to image sequences unless i have to. Anyone have any other ideas???

Image sequences are no big deal. In fact, many of us prefer them under certain circumstances. If you’re concerned about the delay when re-rendering for QT, consider how much time you’re spending as you wait for us to find a solution. 🙂

That said, are you using any plugins that are not up-to-date?

Yeh i guess i just always think of rendering image sequences as a pain in the arse because of the rerendering process – rather knock it off in one hit if poss! But you’re right i prob should use them more often than i do.
And don’t worry 🙂 i’m not waiting for you to find a solution… i rendered on another computer which was fine, but would still like to figure out what that error was all about in case i get it again.

ps – not using any plugins in this one.
Could it be that i turned on a bunch more motion blur than the previous render???

I’m not sure what’s wrong — I don’t think it’s motion blur. Basically, when we troubleshoot, we try to isolate all differences between the successful attempt and the failed attempt. Is there anything else that is different?

no thats it – aside from, a new computer and an upgrade to ae7…

I know this was 6 years ago, but I recently ran into this problem and thought I’d offer my input for any future googlers.

The problem when I got this error was an issue with a mask shape which had a key on the same frame my project was erroring out on. Through lots of guess and check I narrowed it down. Turned out I didn’t need the key anyway and this fixed the problem.
