AE effects going to 35mm
Hi all, not sure if this is the place to post this but if not hope somebody has some tips/opinions that can help.
We are working on two features shot with the P2 (1920×1080 24p). Right now both films are in the visual effects part of the process, the people that are in charge of that are using AE to get some 2D done and some basic masking, like erasing booms and stuff.
For all of us, this is our first experience working on a feature shot with the P2, and first on a feature that’s gonna end up on 35 mm, which is making us wonder if the AE workflow is the appropriate one.
I’m the one editing it, so, my workflow to get to them the footage has been, in one case, giving them the quicktime that were exportd from the P2 and the Firestore and on a separate document the In-Outs of the used portions, in other cases, exporting the clips from Final Cut with NONE compression and just with some 15frames of head and tail. The reason for that was cause when working with PC the clips imported from the P2 and Firestore won’t open. (we just have the quicktimes not the content folder with the .txt file original of the P2)
I assume that so far both workflows work, maybe one is better than the other in terms of handling the footage in AE (faster, easier), but in terms of losing resolution or something like that, i think both process are compression free. If i’m wrong please correct me.
So, now, that the effects need to go back to the original edit i’m assuming that exporting from AE to FC the product should be set on compression NONE to not lose resolution, instead of using Sorenson or Animation, or some other codec.
This is were we are not certain of our workflow.
We will be happy to hear other people’s expertise in the area. Is our workflow correct, or just good enough, or just plain a mess?? and what is the best output from AE to have the movie and effects as crystal clear as possible the moment of the blowup??
Thanks much.
