AE doesn’t see my openGL video card…
Posted by Lon Waitman on February 24, 2009 at 7:25 amI am not sure what happened. A week or two ago, I checked and AE (CS3) saw and was using my openGL video card (Nvidia Quadro FX 570) but today, I checked and openGL is not an option anymore. It is not listed in preferences/previews, and is not an option under my comp window. But the card is evident and working when I check under Device Manager. Any ideas?

Updating the drivers on the card should fix it.

February 24, 2009 at 8:37 pmThanks for your responses. I really appreciate it.
The problem is that it says in AE (in preferences) that no compatible openGL card can be found. This is so even with no comps at all, just a blank project, as well as in projects with lots of comps and effects. And I do know that there are lots of problems with AE and openGL, but I am concerned that this may be a symptom of something worse, since a couple weeks ago, AE was able to see and use my video card. And I do have the latest drivers.
Also, I have started having sound problems as well. When I first open a project and start working, and I am working with comps that have sound, at first the RAM previews are fine (the audio renders immediately), but after maybe 15 minutes or 1/2 hour of working, the RAM previews bog down (if they have any audio) and when I click “RAM Preview”, AE just sits there for several minutes before the progress bar for the RAM Preview begins to move in the timeline. But if I disable sound in RAM Preview, then the problem ceases. And if I close AE and re-open it, the problem is gone, and RAM Previews work well again (with sound), but then again, in about 15 minutes to 1/2 an hour, the same problem is back…
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have two major projects I am working on right now and it’s deadline fever!

February 24, 2009 at 10:45 pmI would try one last thing before going any further. Try updating to the latest version of CS3. Launch AE and go to Help–>Update. If for some reason that is grayed out, you can use this link.
Hope this helps!

February 24, 2009 at 11:13 pmThanks Grant, for the time you have taken to offer suggestions.
I just checked and I am current with updates. I may try uninstalling and re-installing my video drivers, in case they have somehow become corrupted.
Hey, I see you’re in Mpls. I went to college there, back in the day (U of M, in the 70’s). I was in the acting/theatre program, and acted in various theatres around town. I love the Twin Cities.
Blessings,

February 24, 2009 at 11:38 pmThis is kind of embarrassing to admit…I had removed the openGL plugin last week because AE was crashing and I thought it might help. DOH!!! Sorry to waste people’s time. :o(

February 25, 2009 at 2:04 amNot sure yet. I haven’t worked on any large, busy projects since I took out the plugin and added more RAM. But I will know soon.
