  • AE doesn’t recognize its own exported avi

Posted by Naglis Ramanauskas on January 16, 2011 at 10:55 am

Mainly everything is in the title. I have created several compositions, which I wanted later to compile into a whole film, and exported them into avi format(DV\DVCPRO-NTSC). Then, when I tried to import the exported video files back to AE or Premiere, it seemed not to be able to recognize the video, only audio playback was available. Help would be appreciated 🙂

Do these videos that don’t load properly in AE have any problems playing in video players on the same computer?
If so then there might be damaged codecs or codec conflicts on your system, which might be affecting separately what AE can encode and decode.

My first move would be to download and install the latest versions of all your codecs installed on your system, which is easy if you use codec packs such as K-lite for example (which I find quite comprehensive and stable – at least in Win7)

The weird thing is that all the media players can open the video files properly, while AE can’t even recognize its own. I have tried to reinstall the codec pack, but it didn’t help. Any other suggestions?

So your project is set to DV\DVCPRO-NTSC and your rendering out an AVI but what codec are you using?

Graham:I’m not sure where to look for the codecs, thought it was indicated by DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, where should I look for those?

Dave:I’m actually using AE CS3 and using the render queue didn’t actually help, so the problem must be somewhere else.

Anyway, when the movie clips are converted to .wmv with a video converter, AE recognizes it fine, like other .avi or different format clips, that weren’t exported from AE. I, however, would like to leave the converting solution till there’s nothing else left, because converting such a big quantity of high quality files would really take a lot of time.

    Output module settings>Main Options>Video output>Format options>Compressor>No compression

I’ve tried other codecs now and they seem to act even worse. ffdshow and DV doesn’t let me render at all says “invalid compression size (53::35) while cinepac manages to export, but after that, the file cannot be played or imported to AE. Something seems to messed up with the AE codecs, because even if I try to export(not render) different composition with different import files, and import it back to AE, the outcome is the same(it manages to import, but only audio playback is available).

Fist of all, I actually use Ae CS3, and secondly, this is the first time this problem has somehow came up, for example I was working on a project with AE a few months ago and everything worked fine, so whatever is wrong now, must be a result of different project settings, changes that have been made in the AE preferences or something similar.

Have you reset AE’s preferences? From the Work with preferences [link] help page:

To restore default preference settings, hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift while the application is starting. To also restore default keyboard shortcuts, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the OK button.
