i’m not completely sure about what you mean by hanging… does it hold for a bit then start rendering, or is the mouse pointer turning into the spinning beach ball of death and ae completely stops responding, forcing you to do a force quit to get out of ae?
just a few quick notes on your settings… it’s a little unclear in the ae docs about this, but since the minimum ram for os10.5 is 512mb, you may want to leave at least .5gb for the os in the ‘ram to leave for other applications’ setting….
you might also try pushing the longer preview/faster rendering slider back towards faster rendering a bit. this leaves more ram for processing, which may help you out some.
have you tried disabling the multiprocessing option and disk cache… multiprocessing can sometimes get a little buggy. and you didn’t mention that you had external storage for media/renders, disk cache will often have a negative effect on performance if you are using it with only one drive bus (like the internal drive bus).
if you’re still not having any luck, you might try pulling the preference folder to the desktop and restart ae. find the folder called ‘9.0’ in users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects and move it to the desktop. when you restart ae, all those files will be recreated and ae will be reset to it’s default state. try a ram preview while ae is in that state to see if you still have the hanging problem.
also, did you have any problems prior to installing osx 10.5.7…? i haven’t heard too much about 10.5.7 causing issues with ae… but there is a possibility that it could have caused a problem. you should also do a repair permissions after a system update (applications>utilities>disk utility, select boot drive and click repair permissions)… it may not help this issue, but it’s good practice…
