AE CS3 slow down
Posted by Jeff Carson on January 14, 2008 at 7:41 pmI am using After Effects CS3 on my 8 Core Intel with 5GB Ram.
Any time AE is running, the rest of the system is sluggish. Cannot switch between apps very quickly, or generally get the machine to work very well. Also, it takes a long time for AE to launch and (especially) quit. Before the upgrade to CS3 and FCP Studio 2, I could be rendering in AE and playing back easily in FCP, but now, forget about it. Have not re-installed CS3.

I’m sure you didn’t mean to write G5 in your system specs, but that does bring to mind one possible problem. I don’t know how it could’ve happened, but you might want to check CS3’s Get Info window in the Finder and make sure that it is not opening using Rosetta.
Other than that make sure that your Memory & Cache settings are ideal:

January 14, 2008 at 8:26 pmYep, the old G5 naming habit dies hard.
AE is not opening with Rosetta and Open GL is off. Tweaked some RAM settings, but they were not out of the ordinary. We’ll see if that helps.

January 14, 2008 at 8:42 pmdisabling multiprocessing should allow more resources for other applications… i remember reading a tech note about modifying file in ae to limit the number of processors used in multiprocessing… if you could do the same for fcp, you could limit each to 4 cores.
i’ll try to find that tech note…

January 14, 2008 at 8:57 pmhere is the technote from adobe:

i think by limiting the number of cores used for rendering you should get better performance with other open apps. ae7 only used more than one core for just a few of the multiprocessor aware effects, so the other cores were often available for other applications. same goes for ram, ae7 could only grab 3gb, now with cs3 and an 8-core machine, it can grab 24gb….

January 14, 2008 at 10:11 pmThanks Kevin,
Hacking the preference file is not something I have done in AE before (I am a user since 1993). Seems pretty klugey. However, I did it and it seems to have helped. Will test some more.Dual 3Gb Mac Pro Intel 8 Core, 5GB RAM, OS 10.4.11, FCP2, CS3

January 15, 2008 at 8:04 pmChanging to 6 cores did not improve things. Still difficult to do anything else with any other app while rendering DVCPro HD in AE.

January 15, 2008 at 8:53 pmhow about if you disabled multiprocessing all together in ae… just uncheck the render multiple frames simultaneously option in ae’s multiprocessing preference. it should make cs3 render like ae7 did, with a single processor render engine.
i don’t think i would always work that way, but i could see how that might be useful sometimes.
i think nuceo pro has built-in options to limit the number of processors for rendering… creating a background render process, allowing you to continue working in ae (or, presumably any other app). it might be worth looking into…

January 16, 2008 at 2:13 pm… In fact I am running Nucleo Pro. Just installed it and I am a total newb (maybe even a genuine noob) about how to optimize it. So. I turned off multiprocessing in AE, and am learning what setup will solve this.

January 16, 2008 at 3:21 pmaharon rabinowitz did a tutorial/review of nucleo pro about a year ago. i believe he covered some of the setup, along with what it was and benefits, etc…
here’s the link:
