A friend may begin a freelance/contractor situation soon and need some advice/input from the folks here at The Cow.

He will be starting up an internal video communications dept for a large local corporation – localizing services that had previously been handled by 3 NY contractors (He’d love to know what they were charging pr/hr) He’ll be doing everything except the actual shooting (have several videographers lined up) – that’s meeting with the clients, coordinating/developing the creative direction (treatments – and possibly farming the script writing out), doing all the 3D/2D graphics and producing final edited video via After Effects (plus any illustrator/photoshop work necessary)…

Here’s the million dollar question – how much should he charge per hour? How much do other folks charge in your area/market?

Depends on a lot of variables. In this area (NYC), I have charged people as low as $50/hr. for a simple animation and sometimes over $500/hr. for extremely complex animations.

    A couple of questions:
    1) How long is the project going to be?
    2) Is this goint to be a “full time” thing for a couple of months/weeks? Or is it only for a couple of hours each day?

Since the job description entails pre-production, post-production as well as deliverables, make sure that he is being paid for all of those things and not only for the AE part.

The company wants to get one rate that encompasses all his job functions – creative concepting, client presentation, pre-production, talent coordination, production supervision, vendor coordination, storyboards, 3D/2D animations, editing the final videos (in AE) and delivering final labelled DVDs. The projects will vary from basic talking heads, motivational/sales, PSAs, etc. – a single rate for all these functions. These responsibilities were handled by 3 separate contractors in NY.

Initially he will get a minimum of 20 hrs/wk – but it is expected to become a full time salary position within 6-12 months.
