  • AE as an Avid Plugin?

Posted by Thegame2737 on November 5, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Hey guys, I’m starting to learn AE and I heard that it can be used as an Avid Plugin rather than a standalone program. I know I have the AE AVX downloaded for Avid, but I can’t figure out how to jump into AE from Avid. Anyone know how this works? Sorry if it is a dumb question, I’m just not AE saavy quite yet.

    Thanks!

What you’ve likely heard about is Elastic Gasket by Profound Effects. Check them out here:

    https://www.profoundeffects.com/products/gasket/

What it attempts to do is take 3rd Party After Effects plugins and port them to your Avid. Note that not all effects will translate. I’ve never used it so I can’t say for sure how well it works, but the idea is that if you’ve paid for the plugins to work in After Effects, you can use Elastic Gasket to use them in Avid as well and avoid having to buy an Avid License of the same plugins. If you read about it you’ll notice that the effects that come bundled with After Effects don’t translate.

It looks like you can download a trial, but if you’re on a Mac you probably won’t find a version that works. It looks like the Mac versions are woefully out of date or simply not supported. If you end up using it, let us know how well it works.

    Good luck,

    Michael.

Or you might be referring to automatic duck. It’s a third party program that will allows you to export an OMF of your timeline. You then can import that OMF timeline into AE, it will use the digitized video as your source and will attempt to convert some of the effects you did on the AVID to comparable AE effects, ie dissolves, maybe a few more.

You still have to render out from the AE to get back in Avid, but it’s quite handy when you need to edit video but need to heavily composite it in AE.

Elastic Gasket doesn’t work very well in the current systems. It appears it is no longer being supported.

If you want the After Effects style interface within Avid, take a look at Boris Red.

How to jump from AVID to AE?
I usually export the Video tracks of desired sequence into AAF. Then importing it into AE, need to relink clips to the OMFI Files afterward. Effectively works n very helpfull. No 3rd party plug in required.
