AE and FCP X surprise
Posted by Bret Williams on December 10, 2013 at 6:55 amI thought FCP X wouldn’t relink to anything that wasn’t exactly perfectly the same – clip name, length, specs, etc?
I just rendered something out of AE and brought it into FCP X. Then I quit X, rerendered the file over itself, and doubled its length. I opened up FCP X, expecting to have to delete and reimport. But to my surprise, no errors. I just went to the file in the timeline and dragged out the new added length. Whaaaat?
Oh Bill, please explain. Why didn’t I make the FCP X database driven file system explode? 🙂

I heard the codename for 10.1 is SkyNet.

December 10, 2013 at 5:07 pmOne of three possibilities, methinks.
A) some complex thing where in some file types, the “end of file” indicator isn’t a deal breaker to X.
B) After Effects and FCP X were lonely over the holidays and have now become BFFs (best File Friends) just so they’ll each have someone to spend the holidays with.
Or my preferred answer,..
C) Christmas Miracle!

December 10, 2013 at 11:28 pmThis must be something with 10.0.9 which seemed to squash the dreaded “Modified File” bug. I’ve been doing my auduo processing with iZotope and have had zero problems relinking to the new processed file. Seems that the important thing is the length of the clip doesn’t change.

December 11, 2013 at 12:42 amBut that was the point of my post. I doubled the length of the file and didn’t even have to relink. It never went offline. It just saw there was more footage and I was able to extend it.
