Well, frustrated with the slowish refresh of AE 7.0 in comparisson with 6.5 scrubbing the timeline, I’ve tried to use the undocked panels preset , and what a difference! It seems like it doenst need to redraw as often the viewport and timeline as they are separate. It is reflected in performance. You can just try to hit spacebar and see the FPS in the Info Panel, compare this fps with and without undocked panels. I would like to hear what you think about this and how much difference you feel. Greetings.

I have my project/effects panel, viewport (comp window) and timeline dock in my left monitor and everything else in one big floating panel to fill the right monitor. I’ve never had any problem with redraw or UI lag and I’ve got a pretty rubbish machine!

I had a project that required me to work in 6.5 again… I swore until I was blue in the face…then I swore some more. I was constantly moving windows around. I LOVE AE 7’s INTERFACE. If it means that I take a slight hit in performance, then so be it…..

Why would you have a 6.5 project? Can you not edit it in 7.0?

of course you can, but then you can only open it in 6.5.

and the client wants the project in 6.5 so…

Resize the timeline??? Well, its really easy to do it in 6.5 and windowed AE 7. You only need to make 3 or 4 workspaces, every one with some more timeline height. Simply assing the workspace to a shift+Fnumber hotkey and you’re done…

not working on my machine, and some places dont like you screwing with the prefs…

besides that its just so much nicer resizing at will to exactly what you need, plus have the ~ mode…. oh i miss that
