  • Advice with editing 5K RED project – Proxy; rendering etc.

In May I’ll be editing a short film (5min), shot on a RED Epic @ 5K.

Computer specs (No money for upgrades at the moment): i7 3770K processor with 16GB of 1600 RAM. Win 7 64bit. The graphics card is a GeForce GTX650.

    I have a few questions:

    1. I’m wondering if PROXY editing is as simple as right-clicking my files in media big and clicking ‘create video proxy’. Do my clips need to be in my timeline? Am I likely to experience crashing if I create proxy files for about 700GB of footage?

    2. On my last EPIC project, while rendering, the render would suddenly stop at a certain percentage (although, the estimated time would continue to count down to zero, so it didn’t ‘freeze’ as such). This would happen when rendering to a number of different files types (mp4, wmv etc). How can I overcome this for the next project?

    3. Will my computer specs allow for a 4K render, for digital cinema projection? Will this take years?!

    4. What file would I render as to get the best 1080 quality for internet (vimeo, youtube)?

    1. Smart Proxy. Media does not need to be on the time line. Just click to create and the proxy is used for draft and preview quality modes. The proxies are HDCAM EX type files (MPEG-2) if you care to snoop the internals.

    4. Best output for net would be to use DNxHD as an intermediate and use Handbrake (to use the x264 encoder) to generate your file for upload. Straight from Vegas the best H.264 encoder is the Main Concept CPU only encoder.

Can’t comment on anything else. Out of my league.

    Great thanks.

I rendered to MAINCONCEPT AVC/AAC ‘Internet 1080 HD’

My video has some nasty compression distortion:
