Advice please!? Which notebook for vegas, Mac book pro or Msi g70?
Hi Guys,
I need to make a decision fast, I need a mobile work station as i’m going away and need to be able to edit video fast. I’ve stayed away from macs for many years sticking with the I can do anything windows BYO station.
My question is, I use and love sony vegas, if I get a mac, boot windows 7 (or maybe 8) onto a partition and load vegas on that (is this feasable). or just get a high powered windows laptop.
here are the two comparable priced options. (if you have others please let me know.
£2499 – MacBook Pro retina – 2.8-3.8ghz i7 – 512gb ssd – 16gb 1600mhz ram – nvidia geforce gt650m (1gb ddr5 ram)
OR
£2306 – MSI gt70 – 2.4-3.3ghz – 128gb ssd + 750gb hdd(7200rpm) – 16GB (1600) ram – nvidia gf gtx780m 4gb ddr5.
The weight of the MSI is about double the mac and the resolution is 1920×1080 rather than mac pros 2880×1800, but the msi has blu ray writter, it has a bigger 17″ screen.
Can anyone shed some light on which would run sony vegas faster, render faster and last longest?

IMHO, (and that’s all anyone can offer) there is really no comparison. You just can’t beat a MacBook Pro Retina display. You could have the preview window in Vegas be full 1080p and still have plenty of room for tracks. They are just unbelievable displays. Also the Mac’s battery will last about 7 hrs while I’ve never seen a PC go for more than 3 hrs. The MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt which is 10Gb/s throughput compared to the 5Gb/s USB 3.0 on the PC. That’s twice as fast I/O for external hard drives which video editors seem to use a lot of. Finally the Mac gives you more compatibility options if you need to work with other professionals and post houses that use a Mac. It’s the best of both worlds and there are no down-sides. You can always get an external Blu-ray writer if you really need one but really, who uses Blu-ray? Everything is delivered on-line these days. I recently switched from Windows to Mac and I’d never buy another Windows PC again. My vote is for the MacBook Pro without a second thought.

I mostly run it in a virtual machine using VMware Fusion 5 but you don’t get GPU hardware acceleration. For GPU support you need to use Bootcamp on a separate Windows partition. I use Windows 7 64-bit for that.
I don’t like using Bootcamp because 99% of everything I do is on Mac OS X so it’s too inconvenient to reboot just to use Vegas which is why I use Fusion most of the time.
