Advice on the best way to burst a solid into sand

March 23, 2008 at 4:06 amI have a 3D scene that animates a variety of objects into place on a floor. For a neat effect, at the end of the piece, I want all the objects to basically burst into sand and fall to the floor.
I’ve been playing with 4D particles for the first time, and can figure out how to produce sand and make it fall to the floor. What I can’t figure out, is how to make the particles start formed to the existing solids and then scatter from the form.
Is 4D the right tool, or should I be looking at something else? Any advice on the approach is appreciated.
