As I’m delving deeper into motion graphics and my projects become more complicated my system has started to struggle, I’m having difficulty running previews and AE freezing.

    Here’s my current system

    Windows 10
    Intel Core i7-4750HQ 2GHz
    16GB RAM
    1TB HDD + 128GB SSD
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3GB

Just to be sure my GPU set up is correct, these are my settings. I’ve noticed my GPU isn’t supported however I have checked the option for ‘enable untested GPU’. Is this the correct method for maximising my graphics card?

    Fast Draft: Available
    Texture Memory: 1195.00 MB
    Ray-tracing: GPU (unsupported)
Unsupported GPU enabled for CUDA acceleration

    OpenGL
    Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Device: GeForce GTX 970M/PCIe/SSE2
    Version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 368.39
    Total Memory: 2.92 GB
    Shader Model: 4.0 or later

    CUDA
    Driver Version: 8.0
Devices: 1 (GeForce GTX 970M) (unsupported)
Current Usable Memory: 2.43 GB (at application launch)
    Maximum Usable Memory: 3.00 GB

I’m going to upgrade my RAM to it’s max 32gb.

The last thing is my drive set up…

I have my OS and programs installed on the SSD along with 11gb of disk cache. Should I purchase an external SSD and put the disk cache on there and boost it up from 11gb to 200gb? I’ve read from other forums online that keeping the disk cache on the internal SSD is a better option, however mines limited at 128gb and I’m not really looking to replace my internal drive.

    Thanks

What version of Ae are you running? Previews can get slow as you build complexity, but you shouldn’t be seeing freezing. What sorts of work are you doing, and when do you see the freezes?

    1) Upgrade your RAM first. Ae will use as much RAM as you can throw at it.

    2) The GPU only really matters in a few limited circumstances. CUDA can accelerate the ray-tracing renderer in every version of Ae since CS6, but not the Classic 3D renderer. Starting in Ae CC 2015.3, three effects (Lumetri Color, Gaussian Blur, and Sharpen) are CUDA/OpenCL/Metal-accelerated.

    3) The faster and larger your cache, the more it can help you. That’s why people like me recommend dedicated internal SSDs. If you don’t have an internal connection available, a fast external connection like Thunderbolt or USB 3 would be vastly preferred over a slower one like USB 2.0.

I use Illustrator, Premiere and Photoshop also.

How big is the difference in performance between an internal SSD and an external one?

I’m currently working on a lyric video with a ton of comps and textures overlayed

Thanks. I may consider switching out my 128gb ssd in that case
