I’ll add another vote for trying the built-in Remove Grain effect first, then using Neat Video.

One word of caution: noise removal is slow.

Another word of caution: overdoing the noise removal can be hazardous to your edges (making for a bad key). Keep the effect as subtle as you can.

For next time, the easiest fix is in production: use more light when you shoot.

Thanks for the advise. I´ll try the built in Remove Grain first ad see what happens.

I did try to use more light on production but I was having too much bright/ white spots because of the product´s own shiny surface.

A good solution could be to try a presets called: AE Cinema PRO “DV RESTORATION” but actually i can not find it on the net… If you need it you can write me and I will be back to you….

In my experience Neat Video is more effective than AE’s built-in Remove Grain plugin, both for removing grain and removing compression artefacts (probably just as important when shooting the Z5).

Not often mentioned is that Neat Video also has a sharpener built-in that works really well bringing in detail without nasty edges.

Just came across this thread as I have some questions about Neat Video. I was going to use Davinci Resolve’s NR tool but my project has actually been graded in Color and others had advised me that the Resolve 8 noise reduction tools were not as good as Neat Video.

FCP vs. AE are render times or anything else better in AE version vs. FCP? Is there more control in AE like using a mask or whatever else to limit where the neat video filter is effecting noise?

to my surpprice.. Neat video can be put into an Adjustment layer in afterfx! 😀

So you can have multiple clips under the adjustment layer.. Nice 😀
