Activity Forums Adobe After Effects advice on new AE workstation

  • advice on new AE workstation

I am currently thinking about buying a new workstation. I am buying the workstation primarily for AE use allthough I also use lightwave and photoshop. When configuring it I came up with a few questions.

    – First, does anyone currently use 64 bit windows? Is it buggy? How well do regular 32 bit apps (like AE) run on it? Are there any major pros/cons to getting windows 64 bit version?
    – With AE’s current OpenGl implementation, AE doesn’t currently seem to gain much from OpenGL. Does anyone think AE would make better use of this in the future? What advantages would one have from a higher end graphics card?
    – Lastly how important is processor speed (GHz) to AE?

    1. can’t answer – using XP.
2a. Future OpenGL? Anyone who knows can’t say. Under NDA.
2b. Higher end card? No advantage as of yet.
    3. Processor speed and RAM are everything to AE, though currently AE can’t use more than 2GB of RAM. Actually, a fast drive can also speed up renders by allowing faster read/write of stored footage.

Geesh, PCs are so cheap, I’d say max everything out and see how it shakes out 🙂

Steve, if I were a bettin’ man based on your responses I’d say you may know that AE7 will use more of it’s Open GL in some fashion.

I know I’ve said this before, but will you tell Adobe for the love of god to please put in a real color corrector? Or seamlessly integrate CF (and add power windows).

I know I sound like a broken record, but if AE7 doesn’t have one I’m going to start questioning Adobe’s seriosness about AE being a true video tool. This whole ‘Photoshop in Motion’ doesn’t work anymore 🙂

Sorry for rant, I’m just hoping someone with an in with Adobe can shake the tree if the tree isn’t already shaken.

Okay, pulse back to normal now.

Sorry Chris, you’d lose that bet. I really know nothing about AE’s OpenGL implementation in AE7 or whatever.

Now as for shaking Adobe’s tree, there’s always:

I’ve been trying to help people in their efforts to improve the gravel roads near my home. It looks like they will have to take the roads completely down to their base, rebuild and then add the new surface to make the improvements. Like gotta tear it all down to make it better, and that is a lotta work.

    An After effects analogy-

What seems an obvious improvement in After Effects that just isn’t happening may well mean –back to square one to do what has been suggested here.
