Advice on Laptop Purchase
Posted by Seawild on June 1, 2005 at 10:00 amHey Cows,
I have a chance to purchase a 2004, 1.05GHz, 1Gig RAM, 17′ Powerbook for 1700.00 with one year apple warrenty left. I want to use it to take to clients offices and show them work in progress (simple and short, 20-40 layered) AAE, Shake, Photoshop and FCPHD projects. And gather media and files onsite. Is this to much to ask of a powerbook with 1.05GHz with 1Gig of RAM.
Thanks so much!

June 2, 2005 at 5:12 pmJust came across your listing. Your better off getting one of the 12 inch PowerBooks they’re brand new and have a faster processor/ better video card.
Or if you look into wwww.dealmac.com you can see if apple has some refurbished PowerBooks 15 for about the same price as the 17 inch one..

Thanks, but I went ahead and bought it. I went and did a search and found that FCP5 can run on the old 1GHz. Thanks Apple!! And I went over to a friends who is cutting a movie using 3 or 4 layers of DVCAM video on 30min timeline on the same exact machine. I’ll be damned if it didn’t work just fine and render pretty quick. (To give you some reference of my idea of quick… At my day job I use G5s, both dual 2.5 with 4gigs of ram, one Blackmagic and one Kona, both DigiBeta machines…)I’ll probally max out the ram soon as I get it and get a lacee 800 Firewire drive to hold the media. I also picked up an old dual 1.5GHz machine with 1.5Gig RAM, 200Gigs internal harddrives and all software installed(FCPHD,Photoshop,Shake ect…) for 1000.00. Thats what I’ll be doing the bulk of my work on. I’m just cutting DVCAM film tranfers and short Shake projects, so I’ll be fine, I hope! Probally upgrade the ram and get more internal drives and a 800 card.
Is there that big of a difference between 400 and 800 firewire drives for just DVCAM with minimal effects? I’m using fiber at work.
Sometimes I think people forget what we were cutting on just 5 years old… They work just fine too.. I’m not saying I’d use one now..hehe
And one more thing, for anyone else listening.. Would I’d be a dumbass if I tried to run two 24inch flat cinema displays, (the old white plastic ones). No, one is never enough! How about a 24 and a 20? I have been holding out on getting my own machines for years and now I’m going hog wild!
Thanks for responding Nectarios, it always feels bad to have a dead in water post! 🙂 Chris
