Advice on editing big gig in HD1080i?
Hi folks
Got a big multicam gig to edit which was shot HD 1080i 50 and arriving as files on drives. Done a fair few of these 2-5 hr shows with music and interviews intercut, but usually only work in SD and aware the files will be much bigger and data rate higher. Wondered if anyone who is used to working on this scale downconverts the footage before starting or just uses the full rez media?
Anything to watch out for or tips welcome!(FCP6, 8core mac, 8GB ram, 10TB Promise Raid)

In general, yes, heavy multicam is best done at proxy or lower resolution. You don’t say how many cameras (streams) you’re using, nor what kind of storage you have. These details are critical to determining your workflow.
I’d guess that you’d have a much better experience editing in low rez than trying to go full rez.

We are using a 12TB Promise Raid – nice big beast!
And usually capture 8 camera angles from Beta SP tape to 8bit uncompressed. Tis time the files will arive on drives as HD and I’m wondering if the system will cope with that many streams and size of media?David Scott,

That depends on what codec they will be delivered in.
Download the AJA System Test and figure out the speed of your drive. Once you know that then you can know how many streams of video you can work with depending on the codec.
If you had FCP7 then I would recommend ProRes Proxy. With ProRes Proxy you still get really good quality but you also get vary manageable file sizes and frame rates.
But first thing is to find out what codec the video will be delivered in.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
