advice on buying a new GPU?
Posted by Willie Bobo on January 21, 2020 at 7:43 pmHi all,
I bough a 4K camera and the render times are excruciatingly long.
I’m thinking a new GPU is in order but don’t want to spend more than around $200.
B&H suggested the following but it seems I heard somewhere Radeon may not be the best choice for VP 17. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1527976-REG/msi_r5500xtm8c_radeon_rx_5500_xt.html/specs
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

January 21, 2020 at 9:08 pmRandy, no where does this MSI Radeon RX 5500 XT MECH OC Graphics Card show it can handle 4K. Remember: “you get what you pay for.”
Try doing a search for a GPU that DOES handle 4K, as a start, then compare those GPU’s and their price. Lastly, read reviews of the GPU’s you’ve chosen to compare with.
That’s my 2¢
Good luck and report back as to your choice and why so others can learn from your quest.

January 21, 2020 at 11:51 pmAt this time Radeon is not supported in VP17. Radeon was supported in all previous versions. The Vegas team is working on it and they hope to support Radeon GPUs again soon. I have a RX580 and am happy with it. I also have an Intel i9 9900k processor which has UHD Graphics 630 built in a that works well for the video processing I do. I do not do 4k, just standard HD.

January 22, 2020 at 12:13 amI asked a sales rep and he said “It will render any edits you tell it to, regardless of resolution.”
I’m pretty sure he’s right according to the specs.
My question is, does VP 17 work better with Nvidia or AMD cards or does it matter nowadays (as I recall 12 preferred Nvidia.)
Thanks,

January 22, 2020 at 12:15 amThat’s the info I needed, thanks all!
It probably also explains why my renders have been so slow with Vegas Pro 17…I’m currently running AMD.i7-3770 3.10ghz 4 core

January 24, 2020 at 6:09 amOne piece of advice. Whatever you decide upon, make sure that your vendor will accept returns if you’re not satisfied. Some very well known vendors now have a policy of “replacement for defects only”. In other words, if it doesn’t work in your system, it’s your tough luck. Just a suggestion.

January 24, 2020 at 1:57 pmGood advice…I bought one yesterday from BH Photo which has very good customer service/return policy.
The Nvidia card I bought has 3X the memory and much faster than my old card…which was AMD (which James mentioned doesn’t play well with VP 17 anyway) so I hope to see a big difference.
Thanks for everyone’s help!
