Advice on buying a new 3TB drive
Posted by Kat Hayes on September 13, 2011 at 12:35 amI want to get a new 3 TB 7,200 rpm drive for my Macpro. I am looking at drives from https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Capacity_3TB&ci=6525&N=429454238...
Does anyone have any opinions regarding quality of these different drive companies? Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital? I would like to spend about $350 max. Thanks!

September 13, 2011 at 3:30 amI’m noticing that BH has two that seem identical for different prices, anyone know what the difference is?

September 13, 2011 at 3:37 amThey have the same picture up but the cheaper drive is a 5400 rpm coolspin drive. Click on the item for a description.
Still fast enough for most editing.

September 13, 2011 at 3:51 amI did not catch that. When is 5,400 appropriate for editing? I was under the impression that 7,200 was needed or dropped frames become an issue.

September 13, 2011 at 4:25 amWith the greatest respect to Mr. Eisen (above), my own personal experience was that when I installed 7200 drives – replacing my 5400 drives, I ceased to suffer from endless crashes in FCP and my life was changed.
I used to endure many many crashes per day and now I crash maybe once or twice per day. A big deal for me.
Of course this may be due to my particular set up since I am on a 2008 8 Core 2x3Ghz Mac which is old and finicky.
Your situation is, no doubt, different.
But I have two of those drives and all is well after 2 months of use.
Best wishes,
Harry.

September 13, 2011 at 5:13 amMind if I wade in here with a piece of DRW wisdom?
As ya’ll may have noticed, my company trademark is “Post-production without the usual insanity.” I can assure you, cheaping-out to save a few bucks to buy 5400 RPM hard drives for use as media drives is truly the definition of insanity.
Among other variables, hard drive speed equals hard drive throughput, and higher throughput equals not only fewer dropped frames, but better realtime performance across the board.
So please Kat, do yourself a favor, don’t even consider 5400 RPM drives.
And, Hitachi hard drives have proven to more reliable than Seagate and WD in recent years – they ship with gear from most of the best RAID manufacturers that advertise right here on this forum.

September 13, 2011 at 5:26 amHey, David … how ya doing?
I have one 3TB of each make – Hitachi and WD. Dueling drives. And 7200 seems the way to go.
Best,
Harry.

September 13, 2011 at 6:22 amWhat about going faster than 7,200 rpm? I thought I saw somewhere 10,000 rpm drives as an option?
Thanks everyone.
