I have a project coming up for DVD distribution. So, now’s the time that I should upgrade my system. Still debating whether to go to final cut but for the sake or argument if I go with PPRO 2 what should I look for and who should I go to for a workstation. Keeping it in the $12K – $15K range. Reason for the upgrade is everything is on Beta SP. So I want to capture uncompressed and edit uncompressed.
    thanks

You can get an EXCELLENT system in that range (except the decks). Dual Xeons with a couple of gigs of RAM sounds feasible for around $3000. I would reccomend going for the dual xeons dual core processors, with 4 GB RAM, a decent video card for real-time previews on certain effects and perhaps a couple of DVD burners. If you can exactly specify what you are looking to do, then we can help you out better.

Beta SP, huh .. maybe time to invest in new shooting kit? With excellent DVCAM, DVCPro and HDV on the market, XDXCAM HD around the corner, all that dosh to continue to edit uncompressed analogue-sourced material for DVD distribution seems like a wasted opportunity to modernise.

While the tech spec on top end Beta SP is of course broadcast standard the PVW/UVW ranges are not – and even at the BVW end, it’s arguable how much benefit your DVD viewers will see for your extra spend.

Then you could get a really fast twin opteron (e.g. from Boxx), a fast RAID, and have change from $7,000 …

Or if you have masses of archive / stock Beta SP that you just have to use, you could look at an Canopus Edius SP system – lightning HDV (and DVCAM) edit, and component in …. or of course add a Decklink or Aja capture card.

Yeah, I had a shoot over a year ago and it was on Beta SP. So, I want to capture uncompressed if possible. I shoot with DV and DVCam so I understand what you’re saying but at the same time a lot of people still use Betacam for their master tapes. I just want the best of both worlds. Thanks for the insight.

Also, the company I would be working with wants to distribute the final DVD. It would be pressed so, I’m not sure now I would fit in with the authoring but I could be doing that as well. I’ve always done authoring for my own stuff which I burned on the PC. I’m not sure how it works to turn over authored video for a pressing. I’m sure theres’ a format they look for but I haven’t a clue.
