  • Advice needed – Premiere, decklink HD, varricam

Posted by Stewart Mayer on April 30, 2006 at 8:42 pm

I’m about to do a small HD project with my Decklink HD system which is running premiere pro 2.0 and the latest decklink drivers. I’m shooting varricam at 30fps, but also am shooting some at 60fps for slow motion.

After I shoot the stuff i’ll be playing it back via HD-SDI from the camera that night (no budget for a deck, but there isn’t much footage) to capture into the decklink hd. In premiere, if I’m in a BlackMagic 720p 30fps project, will the extra frames from the 30fps footage automatically be dropped durring capture? Then, when it gets to the 60fps footage, will it automatically capture all the frames?

Any advice as to the best workflow would be appreciated. I did this a year ago and had problems, hopefully the bugs have been ironed out by now (not holding my breath though).

    Thanks!
    Stewart

With regards to the 60fps stuff, you’ll have to get it frame converted on the Panasonic black box or through FCP in software. PPro doesn’t handle the over/under Varicam cranking.

Varricam capture can be done using the 720HD 60 Blackmagic preset.
All rates can be captured using this preset.
Once you acquired the material you can reinterpret the footage to the correct frame rate.

Oops, didn’t know that since my last Varicam job.

Ok, sounds like i’ll have to do it just like before. Capture everything at 60fps and then start a new 30fp project and import the clips into it. Unfortunately this makes all the 30fps footage take up twice the disk space.

Is there not a way to force the decklink to capture the frame rate I want it to capture?
