  • Advice for a newbie – Video Track Motion

I’m very much still learning Vegas, so I’ll probably be inundating everyone with questions.

I have a homemade transition where I bounce a tiny video around the screen, on top of a full screen video. At the end of the bounce sequence (more like a Pong ball flying around the screen), I zoom the new video to full screen. Pretty simple, but I discovered at least two ways to accomplish it.

I originally did it using Video Event Pan/Crop, but it appears I could have also used Tools –> Video –> Track Motion.

Using the Pan/Crop method, my video doesn’t really bounce off the walls sharply like a ball would. Instead, it moves in a pronounced parabolic action. Is there a way to make the bounce be very sharp using Pan/Crop?

I have not tried the Track Motion yet. Is the Keyframe Type the way to adjust how the track changes direction?

What is the difference between these two nearly identical functions?

Finally, I’d like to eventually create a “follow the bouncing ball” effect using one method or the other. I know this was a top a couple of years ago, and someone had a VEG file, but it’s long since disappeared. Suppose I have two effects I create for a ball bouncing along the top of lyrics: one is a straight up and down ball bounce (used for the tempo pauses in a song), and the other is a bounce from one word to the next. Off the top of my head, I’d assume I could cut and paste these as needed, simply fixing the start of each segment to a different point on the X-axis of the video. But for the word-to-word bounce, some bounces travel farther than others. How can I EASILY handle the different bounce lengths if I wanted to use a common segment?

Try changing the “Smoothness” setting on each keyframe to zero.

Generally speaking, Pan/Crop is designed to CROP and PAN the events while Track Motion is designed to resize and position the events. However, Track Motion affects the entire track where Pan/Crop is applied on an event-by-event basis. Both have their uses and, as you’ve seen, the functionality overlaps.
