  • Advice: Buying Used FCP

I have an opportunity to buy a FCP system and would like some advice.

First I want to say I’m not a FCP editor. Mostly use Windoze systems (now have a Vegas and used to use discrete edit). Not too familiar with Mac nor FCP but it could add flexibility and depth to my facility.

Its a G4 Silverfox 1Ghz with with 160gb internal storage, FCP, Motu 2408mk2, Matrox RT-Mac etc. System also includes associated audio hardware, video decks for I/O etc.

Since I’m not that familiar with FCP I wonder…will there be issues with transferring licenses? Will I be able to upgrade to newer versions of FCP when the need arises? Is the G4 still a viable platform or is it silly to even consider it?

What other issues should I consider to determine if its a reasonable system for purchase?

If you are getting the original disc w/ serial numbers and especially with system it is loaded on there are no issues. There is no registration like there was with *edit.

The G4 is not really worth much at all, it is long in the tooth. The software is probably an old version so you are basically getting $600 off the upgrade price to go to the current version.

This should would have to be a great deal, I would price the computer and software in the $600 range.

Pretty sure the Matrox RT-Mac card only works under OS9 up to FCP 4, so its not so good if you want to upgrade to osx or a newer version of fcp.
