I’m looking for one of those right now and the braces are a must. However, you may want to work on your promotional materials, like “She’s 13, beautiful, and… she has braces!”

January 17, 2008 at 3:21 amAgencies either love us or hate us. It’s all about personal relationships. The post above about developing a relationship instead of asking for work will take you farther than anything else you can do. I would start with the local cable company and ask for a meeting with the reps. Offer a step above what the in-house guys (if there are any) provide at a price that they can profit on. I did 250 spots in one year based on the above. I was young, hungry and did them for $500 apiece. That was a boatload of money in the 80s. I could shoot 4 in a day and post up to four in a single day. Even though I was capable of a higher level, I didn’t have the salesmanship capabilities to compete with the upper crust. 20 years later, some of those same AEs are still calling.

January 17, 2008 at 11:30 pmSteve,
I notice by your signature that you’re fairly well invested in HD. I do a ton of HD GFX that I deliver via FTP, hard drive, or DVD. However, I never get the edits because I don’t have an HD cam deck (to master HD for broadcast) I want the edits as well as the GFX but I don’t have 50-70k to put down on a deck.
What’s the solution here? Anyone?
peace,

January 18, 2008 at 6:25 amBecause we do have a deck, we get a number of people who have us digitize their footage and lay it to a portable storage of some type. Then, they take it wherever and possibly transfer it to a faster, heavier duty unit. Some bring X-Serve raids, others have SATA or even a Maxtor for the really small stuff.
I’m not so sure that I would buy a deck at this time. A lot of deliverables are Sony HDCAM. Panasonic is selling a LOT of cameras, both in tape and P-2. We just bought two Sony EX-1 HD cameras. I am writing this as I’m transferring a days footage to hard drive.
Quite frankly, the solid state recording thing just scares the hell out of me.
The only reason that we own an HDCAM deck is because we shoot and edit our own HDCAM projects. If I were a post house, I would partner with a someone and split the debt someway. I also offer a “lay back” price of $150 if someone just needs to lay a project to tape as well as some other enticing offers.

Well, it ain’t now. And it ain’t much above that. Cable is a losing proposition in my opinion. There is much more opportunity on the internet.

Randall, interesting statement. Can you elaborate on your comment? I have seen situations that have gone both ways. Thanks.

Sure. Right now, Google is looking for video producers for their Adwords content network. Video ads. Millions of clients. Thousands in every market. This ain’t the 80’s. If you’re chasing cable spots, you need your head examined.

By the way, I meant ‘you’ in the rhetorical sense.
