Please excuse my ignorance in advance.
I like the idea of the HVX-200 being able to record 24 frame native if I plan to go to film and I understand it uses less memory for storage, but when I import the files into FCP for editing and it converts them to QT, won’t it add extra frames to make up 30 and I’ll have the same thing as a pulldown? I know I may just not understand the process well enough.

[Randolph] “won’t it add extra frames to make up 30 and I’ll have the same thing as a pulldown?”

No. When in converts (all it really is doing is adding a quicktime wrapper to the footage so that FCP can understand it) it retains the 24 frames…running at 23.98fps No pulldown is added. Then you can intercut it with Varicam footage that was shot 720p24 which while on the tape at 60fps, the pulldown is removed thus giving you 24fps…24 full frames of video. The main difference is that the HVX records the 24fps on the card, savng space, while the Varicam records the 24fps to tape, but running at 60fps.

Got it? I won’t be suprised if you don’t. Took me a while to get my head around this too.

The thing to get your head around is that FCP does add pulldown whenever you play out to firewire but the footage on your hard drive itself remains 23.98. FCP essentially does a 3:2 pulldown automatically and in realtime as you playback. It’s seamless and works like a charm.
