  • Advanced workflow when moving from Vegas…

Posted by Jonathan Hay on July 9, 2010 at 1:29 am

I’ve just transitioned from Vegas 8/Excalibur to Premiere CS5. I have not found a good transition tutorial for Vegas users, but after a couple of days (and viewing a few posts and videos), I’m now able to do the basics; however, there are still a few elements in my workflow that I have not been able to replicate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apply transitions to all selected clips– Yes I can cntl-D on clip and then Pg Down to the next clip, but I’m looking for a way to apply a video (or audio) transition to every clip I select.

Switch from one transition type to another– My videos typically have a transition theme. I’d like to be able to switch all of my fade to blacks to cross dissolves for example.

Select all blanks on a track– This is so I can ripple delete all the blank spaces quickly.

Ripple delete/insert including track volume envelop– In Vegas you can move all clips over OR you can move all clips over INCLUDING the track envelops. This is very useful when you want to add one additional picture in the middle of several montage songs. Let’s say I have dipped the volume envelop down at points in the music where there is talking, I can select this type of insert and my keyframes move over too so the volume dips are still in sync with my multiple audio and video tracks. Is there an equivalent in CS5?

    Stringing combinations of custom keys
    – How do I change the return key from “render and return to the beginning of the track” to render and stay in the same place? It’s the stop key in Vegas so I keep hitting it and losing my place.

Normalize all audio clips– Premiere allows you to normalize one clip or to normalize a group, but it does not allow you to normalize each clip on a group. My use case is where I have clapping and talking. If I normalize a group with both nothing happens because the clapping is too loud already… what I really want to do is just bring up the talking parts. Is there an easy way to do this for a whole track with lots of clips? Maybe this is something that can be done in Soundbooth?

BTW- CS5 handles my T2i footage like a champ.

    Thanks
    Jonathan

    Welcome Johnathan…

“Apply transitions to all selected clips- Yes I can cntl-D on clip and then Pg Down to the next clip, but I’m looking for a way to apply a video (or audio) transition to every clip I select. ”

Select your tracks, mark in and out around what you want affected…then check the menus, there is a way to do that in CS4 and later. (i’m sure this could be mapped to key combo as well)

“Switch from one transition type to another- My videos typically have a transition theme. I’d like to be able to switch all of my fade to blacks to cross dissolves for example. ”

See above. that would be the closest. There is no way to filter your selection by type of transition that I am aware of. Would be cool though.

“Ripple delete/insert including track volume envelop- In Vegas you can move all clips over OR you can move all clips over INCLUDING the track envelops. PPro has a distinction between clip audio envelopes vs track envelopes. Envelopes applied to clips will ripple with the clip. Track envelopes will stay in place. However I don’t think even this addresses your question as you want the envelope keyframes to move without adjusting the the timing of the content (sound). Not sure how to deal with that one.

“Normalize all audio clips- Premiere allows you to normalize one clip or to normalize a group, but it does not allow you to normalize each clip on a group. A number of normalization functions were added in CS4, but I’m not familiar enough to expand on that. If none of those meet your needs, perhaps a better approach would be to explore audio Dynamics audio effects. Like envelopes, these can be applied at the clip level via drag and drop or the track level via the mixer window. If you’re dealing with riding the dynamics of a series of events, the track level approach would be better, IMHO.

“Stringing combinations of custom keys- How do I change the return key from “render and return to the beginning of the track” to render and stay in the same place? It’s the stop key in Vegas so I keep hitting it and losing my place. ”

Check your prefs. This one is there for sure.

    hope that helps some.

Thanks for the help. I think I at least have a direction to look for everything but the ripple insert/delete… this can not be done at the clip level. For example, if I have one video track and two audio tracks. One with occational talking and the other with a music score. I would like to automatically lower the musical score every time I have audio in the talking track. Is there a way of doing this in Premiere? The only way I know how to do this is with key frames, but the issue with Premiere seems to be that if I make any changes I need to re-adjust the keyframe all the way to the end of the sequence. This is super tedious.

Any hints on an easier way to do this? It was super easy in vegas.

    Thanks
    Jonathan

    For the audio…

in general leave the audio low while you edit so you can make your decisions.

once you make you decisions, raise you music track back up to your max preferred level. then razor spit at your various in and out points where you want the changes to occur.

change the level of one of the clips so that the mix is the way you desire…then copy that clip and ctrl select others you want to match and paste attributes..this will quickly change the volume of the selected ones…

then using methods discussed earlier, use audio crossfade transitions to smooth the changes at the cut points….

or alternately…move the selected clips to a different track…

then you can use the mixer to set the level for that group all at once…and still use the dissolves on the first track to make the smooth fade between the two tracks…

    that help?
