I was wondering if it is possible to use the Width Tool (CS5) on a stroke created with a brush?
It works fine with the pen tool, but i can’t use it on a stroke created with a basic brush…Secondly, does anybody have any idea how to produce something like this in Illustrator:

I use the 3D effects for basic 3D elements, but I’m not sure how to achieve some of the results shown on this image. For instance, how to go about seeing the backside of the stripes circling around the inner sphere…

Here’s a project file…
How to Draw the Vector Stock Sphere
1 – Rotate the original so it’s vertical.
2 – Create swatches and eyeropper all of the used colors.
3 – Radial gradient for the sphere.
4 – Draw ellipses for each of the rings.
Make the stroke width the same as the ring.
5 – Duplicate the path rings so you have a backup of the primary structure.
Then, Object/Path/Outline Stroke.
6 – Drop the transparency of the new rings so you can see the raster.
7 – Use the Group Selection Tool to select and adjust the inner
outer rings.
8 – Pathfinder/Divide and Ungroup so you have a back and a front ring.
9 – Duplicate the front rings to create the drop shadows.
Duplicate the sphere to use as a mask.
Object/Clipping Mask/Make.
10 – Create subtraction masks to use with
Pathfinder/Minus Back.
11 – Rotate a copy.
12 – Duplicate the rotated copy and Pathfinder/Unite
for the reflection and apply an appropriate gradient.Vince
