    this is probably a way dumb question but im new with af so i need help. i want to put lightning on my footage. so i am using advanced lightning. but when i use it there is a black back ground on it so when i put it over my footage it blocks some of it out cause of the advanced lightnings background. how do i get rid of it?

    you go to the effect controls and turn on the “composite on original” option.

    oh my heck that was perfect. that helped so much. thank you. now as i said before im just starting learning AF. along with just going in and messing around with every thing how would you suggest i start learning every thing. are there any really good tutorials for that that you know of??

    well you can look for after effects tutorials in creative cow for a start,there are many great tutorials some for beginners and some more advanced.
    you can also use the after effects help,it’s very useful too.
    and also mess around and play with the program thats a good way to learn anything I guess.
